Never fond of the overly large and ornate Elsinore, Harvey soon moved to Brookville and settled in his own residence, which he called The Box. He set out to study foxhunting from the best instructors in the world: M.F.H. Thomas Hitchcock, Loulie, and daughters Titine and Helen; M.F.H. Joe Davis and Mollie; M.F.H. Harry Nicholas and Dotsie; Emily Ladenburg and her daughter, May; Ambrose “Brose” Clark; and Harry S. Page. Under their tutelage, Harvey graduated from his pony, Fireworks, to the Davis’s high jumper, Nimrod.

By September 1924, Harvey had a stable of horses, but his big gray one called The Ghost reached celebrity status when Edward, Prince of Wales, visited. The Ghost was selected to carry the visiting royal on a Meadow Brook hunt. Afterward, all sorts of people wanted to buy the big gray horse. Harvey resisted for a while, but then sold him for ten thousand dollars, an exorbitant price at that time. Harvey thought The Ghost should have a big send-off, so he hosted a lavish “Ghost party” at which his guests were instructed to dress appropriately—as ghosts. His more creative friends embraced the challenge and arrived in some elaborate and spooky costumes. Over the ensuing years, Ladew became friends with the Prince of Wales, who was demoted to the Duke of Windsor with his abdication in 1936. The duke teased Harvey claiming he owed him a sales commission for the Ghost transaction.48
